The Secretariat of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity (REDH) regrets the death of Spanish communist leader Julio Anguita today. Anguita, although retired from the political front line for health reasons, remained a tireless grassroots activist in the trenches in the fight for human emancipation. As Secretary General of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and General Coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU), he maintained close ties with the revolutionary processes in Latin America and the Caribbean. He always had an anti-imperialist position in the analysis of these processes, together with critical support that he never hid, a product of his communist thinking, his internationalism and his commitment to the causes of all peoples in struggle. His concern to build organizational tools from the base to help to bring awareness of the need to transform the political and economic system, his defense of study for the liberation of the dispossessed, of culture in a broad sense, as well as his ethical example, are part of the legacy that Anguita leaves for posterity.
