The overwhelming electoral victory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the presidential elections in Mexico, is a firm statement from the people of that brotherly country of their desire to make a great change of course through politics and ballot boxes. It is about eradicating the scourges that Mexicans have long suffered, particularly from decades of the application of neoliberal policies that comes with corruption, inequality and social injustice, poverty, the denial of rights for native peoples, unbridled violence, the surrender of its foreign policy and the riches of the country.

This election marks a milestone in the political history of Latin America and the Caribbean, where the rise of a popular government in the homeland of Miguel Hidalgo, Benito Juárez, Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa y Lázaro Cárdenas tilts the balance in favor of popular struggles and the progressive governments that are fighting against neoliberalism and for the unity of our America. López Obrador has said that his foreign policy will be in defense of sovereignty, independence, non-intervention and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. This connects with the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace agreed to by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) at its Second Summit in Havana; a transcendental instrument for the defense of peace in our region.

We join the joy and the justified hopes of the Mexican people with this overwhelming victory and what it represents. Respect for the rights of others is peace.

Long Live Mexico!
