From the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity, we send greetings to compañero President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro, and we offer our unconditional support in the upcoming presidential elections on May 20. This election has a strategic importance, since Venezuela is still at the epicenter of the dispute for Latin America. The fate of the region and the progressive and anti-imperialist nature of the region depends on its triumph, against the neocolonial model that threatens to establish itself in the continent.
The Bolivarian Revolution, founded on the basis of the struggles of the people against neoliberalism and its policies of privatization of the most basic goods for human life, is at the gates of one of its greatest battles for the defense of its sovereignty. It is facing a renewed and threatening imperialist context, in which the United States and its allies intend to reinstate the economic system that was defeated 18 years ago by the Venezuelan people and their leader, Commander Hugo Chávez.
This pretended return of neoliberalism, forged by the U.S. State Department and its national and regional collaborators, has used the most aggressive forms of destabilization for more than four consecutive years, reaching the desperate option of establishing a criminal financial blockade. The intent is to suffocate the Venezuelan people and diminish their revolutionary forces, who are building an independent and sovereign homeland.
From the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity, we are fully convinced that the Venezuelan people will know how to respond, in the revolutionary way that characterizes it, against North American imperialism and its local lackeys. The triumph of the Bolivarian Revolution is greatly needed in these times of turbulence.
As intellectuals, artists and social movements of Latin America and the world, we stand with President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan people in this electoral process, because we understand that what is at stake is the possibility of the continuation of a path towards emancipation for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean. A victory here will expose the farce of the thesis that it is the “end of the progressive cycle in Latin America” and demonstrate that the unfavorable conjuncture in the correlation of forces in the region has been largely the result of imperialist fraud and interference. We have witnessed that in the case of Brazil and more recently in Honduras, that the will of the majority have been ignored and the new governments have reconstituted the neoliberal model of development.
We therefore call on the Venezuelan people and the peoples of our America to unite this May 20 around the triumph of the Bolivarian Revolution, which is nothing more than the victory of the Venezuelan people and of the entire continent in its struggle for our final emancipation.
We call on the progressive and anti-capitalist forces of the entire world to organize, manifest and redouble their solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution at a time when the destabilizing and interfering campaign of the international right has intensified more than ever to ignore and delegitimize Venezuela’s sovereign democracy. This myth will be expressed once again this coming Sunday by electing not only the president but also the political, social and economic model that the majority of the Venezuelan people want and defends.
